Fu difficile approcciarsi ad una band del genere. Inizialmente non c’era speranza, era una battaglia persa. Ostica e triste nei testi, la voce grezzissima, suoni dissonanti e cupi, maledetto quel giorno che non mi ricredetti subito. Dieci anni dopo sono qui per parlare, probabilmente, di uno dei dischi più importanti della scena Rock italiana, una pietra miliare da cui molti artisti e gruppi prendono ispirazione ancora oggi. Un fulmine a ciel sereno, un momento nel quale Il Teatro Degli Orrori poteva vantarsi di girare tutta la penisola a forma di stivale non invidiando nessuno, anzi, rimanendo sempre sopra le righe, a volte facendo anche qualche mossa furba in più.
Ma chi li conosce bene, sa che è anche questo che ci piace di loro.
“Per piccoli egoismi e altrettante Bugie”
Pierpaolo Capovilla, frontman della band, ha partorito questo figlio insieme al bassista Giulio “Ragno” Favero nel lontano 2005. A loro si sono uniti il chitarrista Gionata Mirai e il batterista Francesco Valente e quasi due anni dopo hanno dato vita al loro debutto Dell’impero Delle Tenebre, il disco più sporco, ma che al suo interno conserva delle perle inestimabili. Dopodiché verranno i seguenti tre dischi: A Sangue Freddo, Il Mondo Nuovo e l’omonimo Il Teatro Degli Orrori. Un mix di Rock durissimo che ti arriva fino alle ossa, pesantissimo, con illusioni in stile Piero Ciampi e un lessico alla Carmelo Bene che dietro a quelle distorsioni crea un connubio di epicità sonora.
Chi l’avrebbe mai detto che un disco come A Sangue Freddo avrebbe avuto tanto successo, in un’Italia dominata dalla musica da discoteca o Reggaeton. Guarda il caso, qualcuno o qualcosa ha voluto un album che non é per tutti, e riascoltato dieci anni dopo, non perde di credibilità e violenza. Giulio “Ragno” Favero racconta:
«È stato un lavoro molto lavorato. Ricordo che al mixaggio usai tutti i canali a disposizione, mentre al mastering, con Giovanni Versari, esagerai con saturazioni e compressioni. Volevo che esplodesse nel lettore CD! Fu registrato alle Officine Meccaniche di Milano, ma non si trattò di una passeggiata. Avevo le idee chiarissime su come lavorare, ma quando finimmo un tracollo fisico mi tenne a letto per tre giorni. Dormivamo poco, nel mio caso due o tre ore a notte. Troppi aspetti nel mixing furono figli della fretta, ma va bene così. Purtroppo erano finiti i soldi, il tempo, le energie».

“Io non mi arrendo”
A differenza delle prime due tracce di apertura Io Ti Aspetto e Due, la punta dell’iceberg è senza ombra di dubbio la titletrack, una tematica che tocca il cuore del frontman, la storia del poeta attivista nigeriano Ken Saro-Wiwa, giustiziato in patria nel 1995 facendo molto scalpore.
Pierpaolo racconta:
«La sua scomparsa mi segnò, era stato ucciso per lo sfruttamento delle risorse del Delta del Niger, era una vittima del capitalismo».
A Sangue Freddo è un brano arrabbiatissimo ma che mantiene in ogni istante l’ascoltatore col fiato sospeso per la maestosità delle parole, fra sincerità, teatralità e cattiveria verbale, come del resto anche tutto l’album.
Di primo impatto la musica del Teatro può apparire, se così si può dire, un po’ scorbutica per alcuni termini che vengono usati dentro i brani. Ma è meglio sentire una verità amara o una bugia dolciastra?
Ormai Capovilla si è creato uno stile riconoscibile lontano un miglio e il disco è umano al 100%. Altre tematiche all’interno del lavoro vanno a parare anche con i mali del mondo, ma anche le parti strumentali dicono la loro ovviamente. Nel brano Padre Nostro Il cantante racconta:
«Per quel pezzo fui accusato dai leghisti, ma ho un forte retaggio cristiano per quanto riguarda la fratellanza e la giustizia. Don Gallo la amava, mi fece solo correggere la parola “vendetta”, che non riteneva cristiana. Ai concerti mi sforzo di sostituirla con “giustizia”».
Consecutivamente incontriamo un altro brano anch’esso ritenuto un punto di riferimento della band: Majakowskij, dove musica Rock e teatro si incontrano. Racconta sempre Capovilla:
«L’idea era prendere per i capelli la sua poesia e sbatterla in faccia al pubblico»
Forse il brano con cui ho saputo l’esistenza di questa band su Deejay TV, canale che promuoveva e faceva girare la musica italiana, è Direzioni Diverse, a tratti un po’ tetra, per quanto riguarda il sound elettronico, e malinconica per le parole.
Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo dei Bloody Beetroots si è occupato dell’arrangiamento.
Favero racconta:
«Del cantato tenemmo la prima registrazione, su una musica che avevo scritto in una nottata. Ma l’arrangiamento in studio non ci convinceva, così sentimmo Sir Bob, uno molto distante da noi. Osammo entrambi, lui si innamorò della canzone, inserì archi e cassa dritta e ci convinse».

“Disillusione e Disinteresse”
Forse il brano che caratterizza di più la band pazzoide ma sincera non è altro che È Colpa Mia, una delle canzoni Rock più affascinanti degli ultimi anni. Il brano del Non me ne frega niente ma sotto il quale, se possiamo immedesimarci, c’è un senso di legame per qualcuno di veramente importante. Ricominciare una nuova storia lasciando da parte i rimpianti, oppure proseguire la propria strada, per poi lasciare finire tutto ai due seguenti brani La Vita È Breve e la mini suite tristissima Die Zeit.
Per quanto mi riguarda, probabilmente Il Teatro Degli Orrori è l’ultima band Rock nata in Italia. Che si amino o si odino, loro sono questo, arrivano sempre dritti al punto senza girarci attorno, non facendo sconti a nessuno. Tra parole sentite dentro un’anima che folgora in ogni attimo, gli strumenti che non hanno autocontrollo, questi quattro musicisti in tutti questi anni ci hanno regalato emozioni che è difficile dimenticare, ringraziandoli sentitamente per aver partecipato nel loro scenario.
Questo album lo consiglio a chi vuole farsi il callo su questa musica che unisce tutti, consapevoli che la musica bella c’è anche qui. Ma soprattutto A Sangue Freddo è un disco che racconta i drammi delle persone e anche di un paese che è prigioniero di se stesso. Una musica che smuove le coscienze e che dopo dieci anni viene ricordata con affetto. Adesso però, purtroppo, c’è rimasto solo il silenzio, tutti quanti i membri del Teatro Degli Orrori sono persi tra progetti solisti e progetti paralleli con altre band, ma è sicuro che un giorno ritorneranno a solcare i palchi italiani, e magari anche con un nuovo album. Non ci resta che aspettare.
