Abbiamo incontrato Ras Tewelde, professore e artista Reggae e gli abbiamo chiesto di raccontare la storia e la sua visione della cultura rasta.
- K: All’Università è conosciuto come prof. Tomei ma quando si esibisce ha il nome di Ras Tewelde. Che storia c’è dietro la scelta di questo nome?
R: Ras è un appellativo che in Etiopia veniva dato a generali e principi, quindi è un titolo. Molti dei rasta assumono questo nome proprio come richiamo alla nostra identità (lo stesso imperatore di Etiopia Haile Selassie, prima di essere incoronato, si chiamava Ras Tafari). Tewelde, invece, è la traduzione del mio nome (Renato) in lingua amarica, significa appunto “rinato”. Ho ricevuto il battesimo in Etiopia.
- K: A quale età si è approcciato alla musica reggae e quali sono stati e primi ascolti?
R: Avevo 14 anni. Vidi passare un “capellone” vicino a scuola e mi interessai. Lo stesso diventò il mio “guru musicale”. A 15 anni iniziai a cantare in una band romana (cantavamo in romano!): facevamo concerti e ci spostavamo spesso. I temi che trattavamo erano legati alla denuncia sociale e all’uguaglianza. Dopodiché è arrivata la fede rastafari che ha cambiato la mia passione per la musica in uno strumento per la diffusione di un messaggio spirituale.
Da quel momento (nel 2004) in avanti, una volta tornato dall’Etiopia, ho iniziato una carriera solista con il nome di Ras Tewelde ed ho pubblicato e distribuito in tutto il mondo il mio primo 45 giri. Ho cominciato a cantare in inglese ed in giamaicano (non essendoci mai stato ancora). La crescita musicale e spirituale di questo progetto si è divisa rispettivamente fra Giamaica ed Etiopia: due luoghi che dentro di me dialogano in modo consistente.
- K: A proposito di temi sociali: il suo ultimo singolo è “Look After The Earth”, Com’è nata questa traccia?
R: Sono stato ispirato da questo periodo di sensibilizzazione internazionale sull’ambiente. E’ una collaborazione con un cantante di origine Giamaicana (londinese per la precisione). Con questa canzone abbiamo voluto dare la nostra versione in questo ambito: abbiamo voluto porre l’accento sull’importanza della natura e su come sia lei a prendersi cura di noi che siamo solo “accessori”. Volevamo decentrare il problema per non porre sempre e solo l’uomo al centro dell’attenzione.
- K: Come Ras Tewelde si è esibito al Rototom Sunsplash, il Festival reggae più importante d’Europa. Che esperienza è stata?
R: Il Rototom è stata per me come una seconda casa per tanti anni: come chi aspetta di andare al mare a fine scuola, ma per lavorare. Abbiamo sempre avuto uno spazio italiano, chiamato House of Rastafari (anche perché prima di essere ospitato dalla Spagna, il festival era organizzato in Italia) per promuovere la nostra cultura lì, la componente fondamentale dietro la musica reggae. Nel tempo il festival è cresciuto notevolmente e mi è capitato di esibirmi davanti a molte persone! È stata un’esperienza incredibile ed una forte emozione!
- K: Che situazione sta vivendo il reggae in Italia? Ci sono delle opportunità anche per i giovani talenti che vorrebbero emergere?
R: La motivazione nel raccontarsi attraverso la musica è fondamentale, per prima cosa, ma in generale al giorno d’oggi si hanno molte possibilità per farsi notare. Con un software si riescono a riprodurre dei suoni molto realistici, quindi è tutto molto più facile rispetto ad anni fa, quando anche per un semplice videoclip la nostra band doveva attendere mesi! Insomma, è tutto molto più fruibile. Allo stesso tempo è però più complesso: il sistema politico da molti anni non investe in cultura e la musica (a meno di quella commerciale) non ne trae beneficio. Si organizzano molti meno festival e molti meno locali fanno musica dal vivo, in particolare del nostro genere, considerando che non promuoviamo l’uso di alcool (scelta penalizzante per i locali stessi). Diciamo che per i giovani è più facile emergere ma più difficile rimanere.
- K: Come ci si può affezionare all’Etiopia e non limitarsi a viverla come turista?
R: È facilissimo! L’Etiopia è come una trappola!
È stato il primo posto che mi ha fatto sentire subito a casa. Credo che sia impossibile andare in Etiopia da turisti. Un approccio del genere è difficoltoso perché si tratta di un luogo che si deve conoscere prima di visitare. Conoscerne cultura, usi… È fondamentale per capirne la forza e la spiritualità. Probabilmente anche gli italiani avevano carpito queste sue caratteristiche e pensarono bene di portarci civiltà e cristianità, non sapendo che in Etiopia era presente da molto prima rispetto che all’Italia. In generale sono cose difficili da spiegare, posso solo dire che per me e per le persone con la quale sono stato tornarci è inevitabile.
- K: Come ultima domanda, una curiosità: da quanto non si taglia i capelli?
R: 22 anni! Non so se li taglierò mai… In realtà questa scelta fa parte del voto di nazireato. Non tagliarsi i capelli è un aspetto pratico di questa consacrazione, come non bere alcool e non alterare il corpo in generale. Il tutto dovrebbe avere un termine (come tutti i voti), ma non l’ho prestabilito!
