L’inizio è tragico, ma l’arte stessa è tragica, profonda, meravigliosa, e tale la resero Andrea Pazienza e Jean-Michel Basquiat. Un fumettista ed un graffitaro vissuti in parti opposte del mondo, legati dal male dell’eroina e dalla bellezza dell’arte.
Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat conosce contemporaneamente i due mondi: l’assunzione di droghe con pasticche di LSD e l’arte del graffito a 17 anni. Nasce nel 1977, con il grafitaro Al Diaz, la SAMO (“SAme Old shit), trasportati dagli allucinogeni e dal desiderio di mandare un messaggio colorano e graffiano New York. Era la prima parola di un ragazzo abbandonato dal padre, una voce arrabbiata e poetica. Dal vagabondaggio la sua vita diventa fama, si trasforma in mito e smania di riconoscimento, ammirazione, e di esistenza. Il breve fidanzamento con Madonna, la morbosa amicizia con Andy Warhol, i milioni, lo spreco, la dipendenza. Andy Warhol muore nel 1987 e Basquiat crolla drasticamente, l’assunzione di droghe diventa il suo punto di forza dopo l’ennesimo trauma. Così è il successo di Basquiat vissuto tutto e subito e la sua rovina nella speenball che lo uccise nel suo Loft di New York.
Pazienza
Andrea Pazienza crea i suoi primi fumetti a 20 anni, si iscrive al DAMS di Bologna dove entra in contatto con artisti come Tanino Liberatore, Filippo Scòzzari (fumettisti) e Freak Antoni (leader degli Skiantos). La sua bravura è impressa nelle copertine di dischi (es. “Robinson” di Vecchioni), calendari, poster, spot pubblicitari, manifesti cinematografici, scenografie: è versatile ed è bellezza tutto ciò che crea con la sua mano. Una mano che, tanto magica e tanto debole, cedette alle droghe. Subito bollato come tossico, nasconde il dispiacere con sarcasmo e leggerezza. I tentativi di disintossicazione e la crescente passione per la poesia non lo salvano dal chiudersi nel bagno della propria casa e lasciarsi morire.
Classiche vite da”artistes maudits”? Sicuramente vite particolari ma è sempre sbagliato generalizzare. Dietro a grandi errori sono impossibili da nascondere le grandi emozioni.
L’estro di Basquiat
Basquiat è un tratto ribelle ma consapevole, studiato, emotivo. Uno stile d’impatto, primitivo, tribale, drammaticamente poetico. Osservando le sue opere senti parlare di corpi, di luoghi, di miti africani e richiami ad altri grandi artisti (Picasso, Pollock,…). Le torsioni dei corpi e le espressioni diventano feroci linee blu, rosse, arancioni. Il tratto non è solo, è spesso unito alle parole:
“Cancello le parole, in modo che le si possano notare – il fatto che siano oscure spinge a volerle leggere ancora di più.” Tutto in lui ha un mistero incomprensibile che lo mantiene in vita.
La frenesia di Pazienza
Pazienza, “scapestrato e irriverente”, un impulso. La sua arte è lo sfogo e la cura al suo malessere. Il disegno è un’ancora ed il rapporto con esso è privato, ironico critico, come il suo essere con sé stesso e con il mondo. L’anima prende pseudonimi come Pentothal e Zanardi. Il primo è un personaggio insicuro, deriso, chiuso nel suo sentirsi poco per il mondo, il secondo è arrogante, cinico e tossicodipendente. Pazienza è entrambi, consapevolmente malinconico e ribelle. Talmente consapevole da lasciare un testamento artistico: “Pompeo”, dove descrive la sua tossicodipendenza trasformandola nelle meraviglie artistiche che sempre era riuscito a creare, lasciando chi legge tra lo sgomento ed un surreale cielo bianco.“Vivo sulla lama, mi commuovo nei bassifondi, parlo coi ricercati dello Stato, brigo, mi procuro e dilapido milioni, poi rischio, mi struggo, mi umilio, mi arrendo. Poi mi faccio e tutto torna bello, più splendente di prima. Vuoi mettere risorgere, risorgere, risorgere“.
Uno scopo in comune
Veramente vogliamo unire due artisti diversissimi soltanto per il loro abuso mortale di eroina?

Legatissimi alla propria nazione, Basquiat critica la politica, agisce sulle strade per toccare la società, Pazienza partecipa direttamente ai moti in Italia, incita i giovani nei suoi fumetti. Ribellione forte di due caratteri ugualmente deboli, sovrastati dal peso della fama, della devozione al pubblico: Basquiat vive una fissazione riguardo a ciò, Pazienza è angosciato dai tempi imposti dagli editori.
Il vero punto forte che lega ogni artista di ogni genere resta pur sempre lei, la regina delle loro menti: l’arte.
Colei che li conserva nelle gallerie, che tiene con amore il loro fascino, l’unica dipendenza che non li avrebbe uccisi. Quanta arte avremmo potuto ancora avere da due grandi nomi come questi, ripetuti a sfinimento in queste due pagine: Basquiat e Pazienza.
