Blade Runner 2049, nelle sale italiane questo mese e tra i film più discussi dell’anno, è il sequel del capolavoro del 1982 di Ridley Scott, qui produttore esecutivo. Con tutte le incognite dovute al tempo trascorso dal primo film e alla tendenza del cinema odierno di riesumare cult degli anni passati con improbabili sequel, prequel, spin-off o reboot (spesso poco convincenti), ci si chiedeva cosa ne sarebbe stato di Blade Runner in questo caso.
La risposta è stata sorprendentemente positiva, tanto che 2049 si è imposto da subito tra i film più interessanti dell’anno e tra i sequel più riusciti di tutti i tempi, al pari di Aliens di James Cameron e L’impero colpisce ancora della saga di Guerre Stellari. Così come Denis Villeneuve, già regista di Arrival e Prisoners, si conferma tra i migliori cineasti in circolazione con quella che è molto probabilmente la sua pellicola più ambiziosa, vista la pesante eredità del predecessore.
Blade Runner 2049, come suggerisce il titolo, è ambientato 30 anni dopo il primo capitolo in una Los Angeles megalopoli ancora più lugubre, devastata dall’inquinamento e dalla sovrappopolazione. Qui l’agente K (Ryan Gosling), nuovo “Blade Runner” sulla stessa riga di Rick Deckard del primo capitolo (Harrison Ford), scopre un segreto dalla portata tale per cui avrà bisogno dell’aiuto del suddetto cacciatore di replicanti, nel frattempo ritiratosi da anni, per venirne a capo, attraversando una spirale di violenza, colpi di scena e rivelazioni dal passato.
Dalla durata molto estesa, che lo rende già di per sé director’s cut, il film riprende le tematiche lanciate 35 anni fa dalla trasposizione del romanzo di Phillip K. Dick in maniera efficace e suggestiva, con un mix di elementi innovativi e inaspettati (ologrammi “civilizzati” e programmati per soddisfare uomini e replicanti) ma anche di vecchie conferme: il Leitmotif del replicante che sa essere più umano dell’umano stesso.
Il film, proprio per la capacità di riproporre allo stesso tempo temi del passato e nuovi si mostra come un’opera complessa, non un film commerciale come sembrerebbe all’apparenza ma quasi d’autore, grazie anche all’uso di set analogici e l’uso ridotto della computer grafica, che rendono la pellicola molto fruibile. Il tutto è perfettamente amalgamato dalla colonna sonora di Hans Zimmer, la quale non fa rimpiangere quella di Vangelis, e dalle ottime interpretazioni di Ryan Gosling (sì, il bel faccino di La La Land è bravo, me ne vogliate o meno) e di un redivivo Harrison Ford.
Tra gli altri membri del cast: il wrestler Dave Bautista, nel ruolo di Sapper Morton, Robin Wright (“Jenny” di Forrest Gump) e il chiacchieratissimo Jared Leto nel ruolo che sarebbe dovuto essere del compianto David Bowie, Niander Wallace. Ed è proprio qui la nota più dolente: l’interpretazione è buona e il personaggio ha un ottimo potenziale ma è troppo poco sviluppato, non pervenuto.
Non è nemmeno necessario aggiungere qualcosa sulla fotografia dell’acclamato Roger Deakins, capace di rendere le luci, che siano quelle del neon nella città o i toni degli immobili di un casinò abbandonato, quasi dei personaggi che seguono i protagonisti nel susseguirsi della storia.
Ma cos’è un replicante? I replicanti (termine scelto da Scott in persona perché non inflazionato), sono androidi sintetici uguali in tutto e per tutto agli umani, distinguibili solamente per mezzo di un test di riconoscimento. Pur avendo sembianze umane ma con una forza ben superiore, sono considerati come semplici macchine prive di anima ed emozioni. C’è quindi un ritorno al tòpos del rapporto uomo-macchina visto attraverso l’empatia nella comunicazione.
Rutger Hauer, interprete del leggendario replicante Roy Batty, passato alla storia per l’indimenticabile monologo finale, si è espresso in maniera scettica riguardo al film di Villeneuve:
Di Blade Runner 2 non so nulla e quindi non posso dire nulla, l’unica cosa che posso dire è che non credo abbia senso.
Tuttavia c’è da dire che l’attore olandese non è stato preso in considerazione per un ruolo anche solo da comprimario per il sequel, scelta audace che si è rivelata congeniale e ha evitato di fomentare il fan service. Paradossalmente potremmo dire di averne visti di sequel che voi replicanti non potete nemmeno immaginare…
2049 è un film freddo, cupo, che affronta il dramma esistenziale a proposito di cosa rende un umano tale, ma allo stesso tempo è una storia con un cuore che batte forte e che trascende il genere neo-noir fantascientifico che lo contraddistingue. Se il cinema fondamentalmente consiste nel combinare la forza delle immagini con l’arte della narrazione donando un’illusione di realtà maggiore di qualsiasi altra forma espressiva, con Blade Runner 2049 ci troviamo di fronte non solo un sequel degno del suo predecessore, ma un’opera in grado di rispondere a questa definizione nel miglior modo possibile.
Nel complesso è un film eccellente che merita di essere visto per i momenti filosofici ricchi di pathos e perché tecnicamente superiore alla media.
Personalmente, è stato una piacevolissima sorpresa e non vedo già l’ora di rivederlo.
