Sembra quasi che il venire al mondo in determinate date possa far convergere verso le stesse sorti, passioni e magari anche i medesimi riconoscimenti e risultati, personalità assai distanti e dai bagagli culturali differenti. Un po’ come Silvio Berlusconi e Pierluigi Bersani, che compiono entrambi gli anni il 29 settembre e che hanno ottenuto gloriose carriere in politi… No, no, no… Come non detto.
Risulta molto più facile però se prendiamo come esempi Federico Fellini e David Lynch. Il 20 gennaio infatti ricorre il centenario della nascita per il primo, mentre il secondo spegne la bellezza di ben 74 candeline. Registi di grande fama, successo di critica e indiscutibile importanza per l’arte che li vede come esponenti di massimo rilievo, ma vediamo quanto hanno in comune oltre che questo anniversario.
Fellini e Lynch: qualche punto d’unione
Entrambi approdano alla regia dopo esperienze con le più tradizionali arti visive: Lynch studia pittura stregato dagli espressionisti nordeuropei ed ancora oggi molte sue opere sono esposte nei più rinomati musei mondiali. Fellini, invece, aveva un più umile impiego da caricaturista all’interno dei cinema di periferia. La passione per il fumetto lo accompagnerà per tutta la vita tanto che usava farne come bozzetti per sceneggiature delle sue opere.
Non si possono non citare i sodalizi che hanno stretto con quelli che forse, anche grazie a loro, sono diventati fra i più noti e grandi nomi del cinema internazionale. Dagli attori come Kyle MacLachlan o Marcello Mastroianni (in cui Fellini rivedeva il perfetto alter-ego per lo schermo) agli eccelsi compositori Angelo Badalmenti, che si occuperà delle colonne sonore di tutti i film dell’eccentrico artista di Missoula (quando non sarà egli stesso a comporle), e Nino Rota, dal quale Fellini non volle mai separarsi e solo per le ultime quattro pellicole, realizzate dopo la morte del Maestro milanese, si vide costretto a rivolgersi ad altri (fra i quali Nicola Piovani).
E, cosa alquanto simpatica, sono stati fra i primi ad ispirare degli aggetti, oggigiorno troppo spesso abusati, per descrivere film che risentono fortemente delle influenze che questi colossi hanno e che continuano, giustamente, ad indurre sui futuri registi. Il LYNCHIANO usato per un ironia nata dal sodalizio fra macabro e banale (se con eventuali elementi turbanti ancor meglio) ed il FELLINIANO che sta a indicare situazioni dai toni grotteschi e caricaturali (figli proprio di quel mestiere che lo mantenne prima degli esordi) solitamente con lo sfondo di una rievocazione di vita di provincia, dotata di forte atmosfera e suggestione visiva.
Il sogno, vero elemento comune
Ma è un particolare quello che forse lega maggiormente questi animi e le loro produzioni artistiche così lontani nel tempo e nello spazio: l’onirismo come mezzo per la messa in scena e indagine delle loro narrazioni.
Conviene partire spiegando e analizzando questa costante nell’opera di Fellini e verrà da sé che quella di Lynch sarà non una banale emulazione o semplice omaggio.
Partiamo con Fellini:
Gran parte (per non dire tutta) la filmografia di Fellini è basata sulla sua biografia. Fatti, ricordi, emozioni, passioni e pensieri dall’infanzia/adolescenza fino alle riflessioni senili, passando per l’approccio con la realtà che lo circonda durante gli anni d’oro del successo personale, diventano i veri protagonisti attorno a cui sono incentrati i vari lungometraggi e documentari. Ma anche soggetti che appaiono così distanti dal Nostro si vedono annullare secoli e chilometri di divario tramite quei fattori in cui Fellini si rispecchiava vivamente, arrivando così a intingere ogni storia col proprio tocco personale.
È in questo modo che lo splendido Il Casanova di Fellini, ispirato alle vicende del leggendario avventuriero e diplomatico veneziano, si allontana dai classici biopic romanzati e diviene una caleidoscopica visione del sesso da parte del regista riminese. La passione carnale verso le donne sotto ogni sua forma e aspetto, vera e propria ossessione morbosa di Fellini, gli permette così di trovare un punto in comune col personaggio storico ma anche di dare libero sfogo alle più recondite e torbide fantasie (che possano esser queste una gigantessa oppure una gobba megera).
Ma come riuscire ad allacciare tutto ciò e renderlo sullo schermo? Semplice: permeando ogni singola scena di un’atmosfera onirica e intangibile, che fa ben capire allo spettatore che quanto accade non è la realtà (come fin troppe volte si vuol far credere) ma il susseguirsi delle varie vicende riviste attraverso l’occhio dell’autore. Il tutto aiutato anche dalle sontuose scenografie interamente realizzate in interni e l’eccezionale fotografia di Giuseppe Rotunno.
Uno stupendo mondo plasmato dalle mani di artisti artigiani che trascinano lo spettatore in un’incantevole dimensione dotata di proprie leggi, ove le crespe onde del mare possono esser fatte anche da sacchi di plastica.
Ma la dimensione del sogno ospita anche momenti reali della vita del regista. In capolavori come Amarcord i ricordi d’infanzia nella nativa Rimini (anche questa ricostruita tutta nei teatri di posa di Cinecittà) in quanto tali prendono la forma che Fellini stesso ha di loro dentro la propria mente con tutte le esagerazioni che un avvenimento può aver avuto su un bambino oppure dettati dalla malinconia che ogni uomo ha ripensando alla più dorata delle età (Pupi Avati diceva qualcosa a riguardo qui).
Oppure in 8 ½, che si combatte il titolo di miglior film della storia assieme a pochi altri, in cui Fellini racconta tutto se stesso in un particolare periodo ove non riusciva a trovare ispirazione per un film e fa sì che Mastroianni fugga da tutto e tutti tramite i sogni, magari volando via dalla propria macchina imbottigliata nel traffico o rintanandosi in un ideale casolare di campagna assieme a tutte le più importanti donne della sua vita, dalla madre alla prima prostituta che gli fece scoprire il corpo femminile quando era solo che un bambino, fino a quelle appena viste ma di cui si è innamorato anche se per un quarto d’ora.
La vita e i sogni sono fogli di uno stesso libro. Leggerli in ordine è vivere. Sfogliarli a caso è sognare.
Questo diceva Schopenhauer e Fellini forse questa lezione l’aveva imparata così bene da riuscire a mettere in ordine tutti i fogli che aveva sognato. Il mondo che lo circondava diventa un tutt’uno con quello della sua mente e non c’è modo differente in cui lui lo possa rappresentare perché non c’è modo differente in cui lui lo possa vedere, che si tratti della Roma in cui vive e che appare ne La Dolce Vita o il finale de I Vitelloni in cui il treno su cui viaggia il protagonista passa dentro alle camere da letto di tutti i suoi amici affinché lui possa salutarli e non rappresenta altro che il suo ultimo pensiero, rivolto verso coloro che gli stanno più a cuore prima di partire e abbandonare la sua città.
E Lynch?
Naturalmente una mente affamata di tutto ciò che c’è di bello e geniale al mondo non può esser rimasta indifferente alle innovazioni visive che Fellini ha apportato al cinema ed ha saputo creare un proprio e personale stile lasciandosi influenzare dal Maestro romagnolo. Perché ha saputo usarlo per mettere in scena ciò che però gli interessava maggiormente: la magna opera del Genio statunitense può esser vista come legata assieme da un fil rouge basato sulla ricerca: viaggi e indagini che spesso dall’esterno arrivano a scandagliare il subconscio dei personaggi.
Un po’ come in Cuore Selvaggio dove un Nicolas Cage perfettamente in parte si mostra baldanzoso e sbruffone, con un aria da bello e dannato guadagnata dopo esser uscito dal carcere per aver commesso un omicidio per difesa personale, è pronto a scappare assieme alla sua bella Laura Dern. Ma quando, in mezzo a questa alquanto distorta rivisitazione de Il Mago di Oz, fra killer assoldati per toglierlo di mezzo e rapine non andate a buon fine, perde anche quel’unica certezza che gli rimane, ovvero di amore verso la sua dolce metà, ecco che appare l’elemento fantastico per farlo ritornare in sé.
della mia individualità e la mia fede nella libertà personale”.
Oppure in Velluto Blu, che parte con una cosa assurda quale il ritrovamento di un orecchio mozzato in un prato e che trascinerà MacLachlan e (di nuovo) la Dern in un turbinoso incubo noir con Isabella Rosellini a fare da femme fatale frustrata e un grandioso Dennis Hopper come pericoloso antagonista. Il nostro giovane eroe si vedrà costretto ad affrontare le proprie avversioni verso determinate forme di violenza che sembrano quasi celare e vergognarsi di una sua più recondita parte oscura che volente o meno tiene nascosta nel profondo del suo animo.
Ma il vero capolavoro e ormai cult a tutti gli effetti, concepito da Lynch, che fa del sogno un tema fondamentale è Mulholland Drive. La storia di una giovane attrice che si vede tingersi di mistero, sensazione accresciuta proprio dalla tecnica del direttore, che sceglie cosa mostrare e non ma sopratutto come. Seguiremo Laura Harring per tutto il suo divagare in una sempre più patinata Hollywood cercando di capire il legame che possa avere con Naomi Watts e solo alla fine ci verrà data la rivelazione per leggere e comprendere tutto ciò che abbiamo ripercorso.

Da Fellini a Lynch: conclusione
Tirando le somme possiamo dire che l’onirico è sì l’anello di congiunzione fra queste due personalità, che sia usato per mostrare o per narrare, ma ben diversi sono gli utilizzi fatti ed i conseguenti risultati ottenuti.
Volendo usare due espressioni poetiche potremmo definire le opere di Fellini come malinconici sogni mentre quelle di Lynch affascinanti incubi. Le une così barocche, ricche di amore, calore e musica le altre più posate, invece che raccontare di sé si domandano chi siamo davvero e caratterizzate da un’estetica quasi geometrica. Uno affascinato dall’arte del circo e che ha voluto ricolmare le proprie pellicole con personaggi pittoreschi quasi fossero usciti da fumetti, l’altro cresciuto fra opere di Bacon e Kokoschka e che ama ancora oggi chiudersi nel suo laboratorio di falegnameria per progettare e realizzare mobili in legno.
Per rendere al meglio tale confronto sarebbe bastato prendere in esame le due opere prime di Fellini e Lynch: Lo sceicco bianco, una moderna favola romantica e Eraserhead, angosciante ed eteroclito pensiero sulla paternità e tutte le preoccupazioni che essa porta. Così diversi, così opposti, artefici di emozioni tanto contrastanti quanto ambedue imprescindibili opere di cui non potremmo fare a meno.
E non è un caso che Lynch abbia tenuto lo scorso anno, nella Rimini di Federico, una mostra intitolata Dreams. A tribute to Fellini ove sono state esposte 11 litografie in cui l’Allievo omaggiava il Maestro replicando i frame finali di 8 ½ con la fanfara sulla pista circense, a cui sono state aggiunte 12 tavole disegnate dal pugno di Fellini e scelte personalmente da Lynch.
