Cari lettori,
Oggi voglio parlarvi di un grande rappresentante della cosiddetta “musica difficile”. Un album tanto bello e unico da non sentire il peso dell’età e che proprio in questi giorni compie 40 anni.
Oggi parliamo di Hemispheres dei Rush.
La genesi
Il disco, pubblicato dalla band canadese nel 1978 per la Anthem Records e quinto in carriera, costituisce un po’ la summa del loro periodo più marcatamente Progressive. Nel ’78 il genere stava già vivendo la sua fase calante in tutto il mondo, per lasciare spazio alla musica New Wave, al Reggae e al Punk. I Rush però, refrattari alle mode e alle tendenze di mercato, decisero di produrre un lavoro estremamente ambizioso sotto ogni punto di vista. La produzione dell’album, composto da appena quattro tracce, richiese infatti ben dieci settimane, fu registrato nel Regno Unito in tre diversi studi e mise alla prova tutti i membri della band.
Book II: Hemispheres
Il disco si apre con la lunga suite Cygnus X-1: Book II: Hemispheres brano legato tematicamente a quello conclusivo del disco precedente A Farewell to Kings. La title track, che occupa l’intero lato A della versione vinile, è a sua volta divisa al suo interno in vari atti: Prelude / Apollo, Bringer of Wisdom / Dyonisus, Bringer of Love / Armageddon, The Battle of Heart and Mind / Cygnus, Bringer of Balance e l’epilogo The Sphere, A Kind of Dream. La suite rappresenta un vero e proprio capolavoro sotto ogni punto di vista.
Tematicamente prosegue la storia di Cygnus, iniziata già nel brano Cygnus X-1: Book I: The Voyage, il quale dopo aver intrapreso un lungo viaggio nello spazio e dopo essere entrato in un buco nero, incomincia ad attraversare gli emisferi celesti, dove incontra Apollo e Dioniso, rispettivamente metafora della mente e del cuore, da sempre in conflitto, i quali riusciranno a trovare la pace solo grazie all’intervento del protagonista. La storia e i testi, come quelli del resto dell’album, sono stati scritti dal batterista della band Neil Peart e condensano alcune delle tematiche a lui più care tra cui la fantascienza, la mitologia greca e il pensiero del filosofo tedesco Friedrich Nietzsche, il quale per l’appunto fu tra i primi a parlare, nell’opera “La Nascita della Tragedia”, del conflitto interiore dell’uomo in termini di “dionisiaco” e “apollineo”.
I due singoli
Dopo la monumentale apertura troviamo poi due brani più brevi ma non per questo meno notevoli, come Circumstances e The Trees, i quali diventeranno entrambi singoli estratti dall’album. Il primo è stato definito da Geddy Lee come un esperimento, una maniera per uscire dalla consolidata formula Progressive, cercando di aprire la strada a nuovi possibili format che saranno poi presenti già a partire dall’album successivo Permanent Waves e in quella meraviglia che è Moving Pictures. The Trees invece racconta la storia di una foresta di alberi di acero e di quercia, in cui i primi si scontrano con i secondi, poiché questi, crescendo enormemente, rubano loro la luce del Sole. A dispetto del fatto che la foglia d’acero sia l’emblema nazionale del Canada, da dove provengono i Rush, sempre Geddy Lee afferma che la canzone fu scritta su ispirazione dell’ambiente inglese dove la band era andata a registrare.
La Villa Strangiato
L’album si conclude infine con un’altra suite straordinaria: La Villa Strangiato, la quale però si presenta come molto diversa dalla precedente. Mentre in Cygnus X-1: Book II viene raccontata una complessa vicenda ricca di significati, allegorie e riferimenti, in “La Villa Strangiato” è solo la musica a parlare: si tratta infatti di un brano strumentale di oltre 9 minuti diviso in dodici sezioni distinte.
Alex Lifeson, chitarrista della band, racconta che il brano fu ispirato da una serie di incubi ricorrenti avuti da lui durante il precedente tour. La Villa Strangiato doveva essere la rappresentazione di questi sogni, infatti l’atmosfera onirica e sconnessa che si respira è perfettamente palpabile all’ascolto ed alterna momenti adrenalinici ad altri spaventosi, fino a giungere ad atmosfere grottesche e bizzarre nei segmenti Monsters! e Monsters: (reprise) (al minuto 5:49–6:09 e 8:03–8:16), dove il trio suona una rielaborazione in chiave rock del classico di Raymond Scott Powerhouse del 1937. Ora, la maggior parte di voi probabilmente ignora chi sia Raymond Scott, ma tutti probabilmente conoscono il brano, in quanto fu utilizzato dalla Warner Bros. per la produzione di molti dei cartoni animati dei “Looney Tunes”:
La produzione, su richiesta della band, fornì un compenso alla famiglia di Scott nonostante il copyright del brano fosse scaduto.
An Exercise in Self Indugence
Alla suite sono legati altri due fatti curiosi: il primo che, nonostante la loro illustre carriera nel mondo del Progressive, La Villa Strangiato è in effetti la prima vera composizione unicamente strumentale dei Rush. Il secondo riguarda il sottotitolo del brano (An Exercise in Self Indulgence): Peart e Lee raccontano che dopo aver organizzato le parti del brano erano fermamente decisi a registrarlo come un’unica performance live in studio, rifiutando quindi il cut-up di più take. Dopo quattro giorni e quattro notti e oltre 40 take registrate, il trio, non essendo pienamente soddisfatto di nessuna di esse, si arrese a fare un collage delle migliori tre. Da qui il titolo “un esercizio di auto indulgenza”.
Hemispheres: un gigante
Tutti i membri della band contribuiscono in egual misura alla creazione di Hemispheres, dimostrandosi musicisti ed autori eccelsi: Neil Peart ha scritto tutti i testi del disco con riferimenti letterari eccelsi ed è qui che per la prima volta utilizza i timpani orchestrali nel suo set. Geddy Lee qui ha suonato sia un basso Rickenbacker doppio manico (che abbandonerà pochi anni dopo per un più pratico Fender jazz bass), sia le tastiere e i synth, cantando al contempo. Alex Lifeson infine ha dato forse la sua più grande prova da chitarrista muovendosi agevolmente dalla classica, all’elettrica fino alla doppio manico.
Hemispheres, nonostante i suoi anni, rimane una insuperata vetta della musica, dove il tecnicamente difficile non diventa esercizio ginnico o mero sfoggio di stile, ma strumento proporzionato volto ad emozionare e stupire l’ascoltatore. È un disco sognante che è in grado far viaggiare con la mente e di meravigliare sempre per l’originalità e la passione.
Infine, se avete apprezzato e vi siete incuriositi, per i 40 anni dalla sua pubblicazione è stata annunciata la ristampa ufficiale in edizione deluxe che uscirà il 16 novembre. Non perdetevela!
