Era il novembre del 2004 quando il singolo probabilmente più famoso della band dei gemelli Madden uscì prepotentemente nelle radio americane. In Italia l’onda arrivò con un certo delay nel 2005, parte dell’enorme tsunami del Punk Revival che in quegli anni viveva la sua stagione più fiorente. In quegli stessi mesi infatti uscivano nei negozi, nelle radio, sui canali musicali e nei primissimi download digitali American Idiot dei Green Day, Blink 182 della band omonima, Chuck dei Sum 41, l’incredibile debutto dei Franz Ferdinand e tantissima altra roba accomunata da capelli discutibili, trucco per gli occhi maschili, cravatte annodate male, un sacco di distorsione alternata a ritornelli orecchiabili e una non trascurabile dose di testosterone.
I Just Wanna Live – la storia del brano
I Good Charlotte non svettano in questa piccola rivoluzione avvenuta a cavallo di due millenni: stesso stile e stesse caratteristiche di mille altre band di quel periodo, ma I Just Wanna Live riesce a ritagliarsi un posto sulla cresta dell’onda. Oggi, 15 anni dopo, con dei capelli sicuramente meno reticenti alle leggi della fisica e con una punta (forse) di maturità in più, proveremo a capire perché il brano ebbe, tra luci ed ombre, un successo tale da permetterci di ricordarlo ancora adesso.
Il singolo, secondo estratto dal terzo album della band americana The Chronicles of Life and Death, riassume in sé molti elementi divergenti e interessanti: si apre con un intro di archi cui si sovrappone una batteria molto steady beat e, dopo poche battute, inizia il cantato. Le parti vocali sono a metà tra il cantato classico e il Rap, la chitarra solista di Martin suona un tema molto Funk e gli abbellimenti dati dagli archi completano il quadro, generando un risultato crossover con il pregio di essere assolutamente fischiettabile e ballabile. Un prodotto che poteva chiaramente essere venduto ad un pubblico più vasto ed infatti è stato definito come l’apertura della band al Pop.
I perché del successo
Detto ciò, come si può spiegare l’enorme successo del brano? Premesso che giudicare a posteriori è cosa ben diversa dal realizzare una produzione di successo, si possono però evidenziare vari fattori. I Just Wanna Live parla fondamentalmente del rapporto conflittuale con il successo che la giovane band stava vivendo, la quale cercava di emanciparsi dall’etichetta di comune band Pop-Punk, con tutti gli annessi e connessi: paranoia, difficoltà nelle relazioni umane, indossare un vestito diverso per ogni occasione (ovvero cambiare personalità), per non parlare della stampa (su cui torneremo dopo).
David Campbell, la mano invisibile dietro mille successi
Con lo scopo di arricchire il sound dell’album e di affrontare soluzioni nuove, il produttore Eric Valentine decise di rivolgersi al celeberrimo arrangiatore David Campbell. Il nome forse non farà saltare subito alla mente un volto, ma si da il caso che Campbell sia uno degli arrangiatori e direttori d’orchestra più prolifici ed apprezzati nel mondo della musica e del cinema. Nota è la sua collaborazione che porta avanti da decadi con la band degli Aerosmith, per i quali ha arrangiato tra gli altri Crazy e I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing, così come il resto della colonna sonora del film Armageddon diretto da Michael Bay. Campbell è agli effetti un altro dei Re Mida della musica, avendo arrangiato per band e artisti come Dream Theatre, M83, Linkin Park e Bon Jovi (artista verso il quale continuiamo ancora oggi a nutrire impotenza mentale e fisica), peraltro nel grande successo Always.
Evitando di divagare troppo, Campbell contribuisce all’arrangiamento di I Just Wanna Live, proprio con quell’intro di archi così caratteristico che permette al brano di essere riconosciuto sin dai primissimi secondi, oltre ad una serie di abbellimenti che si possono apprezzare con un ascolto attento.
A Special Easter egg
Altra curiosità all’interno della canzone viene riportata dal sito whosampled.com, nel quale viene evidenziata un’interpolazione (ovvero la ripresa di una melodia precedentemente composta in un brano già registrato). Esattamente al minuto 1:59 della canzone dei Good Charlotte si può riconoscere distintamente la melodia e le parole dei primi due versi di A Message to You Rudy, grande classico degli Specials risalente al 1979.

Luci ed ombre sul successo
I Just Wanna Live ebbe un successo assolutamente notevole, entrando nelle maggiori classifiche mondiali e spingendo l’album a diventare Disco di Platino (quando ancora questa definizione aveva un minimo di valore). Ma non è tutto oro (anzi platino) quel che luccica. Il singolo infatti fu uno di quelli per la cui trasmissione massiva Sony pagò molte stazioni radiofoniche americane, rimanendo così coinvolta nello scandalo noto come “Payola“.
Il videoclip
Il video della canzone, che ebbe larghissima diffusione sui canali musicali, riassume tutto quello che abbiamo detto. Racconta la storia di una band Heavy Metal che nessuno ascolta. I musicisti sono senza un soldo e così decidono di lavorare per una catena di supermercati distribuendo volantini.
Un produttore li nota mentre sono in servizio nei loro abiti a forma di cibo e decide di fargli un contratto e trasformarli in una band Pop. Il resto va da sé: red carpet, bei soldi, grandi feste, belle donne, per poi giungere alla parabola discendente fatta di eccessi, arresti e scoop poco lusinghieri sulle prime pagine delle riviste.
Le critiche e la stampa
Il singolo, così come l’intero album, ottenne recensioni miste da parte della critica evidenziando pareri positivi e negativi.
Una caratteristica che è venuta spesso e volentieri a galla nei miei articoli è la proverbiale capacità di critica e talento nella futurologia della rivista Rolling Stone, che s’inserisce ovviamente tra i pareri negativi. Mi piace ricordare in particolare quello di Jenny Eliscu che sottolineò come il “solito problema” della band fossero “i testi asinini”.
Ironia della sorte vuole che i Good Charlotte dedichino proprio una strofa di I Just Wanna Live a una finta intervista in cui gli vengono fatte le solite domande tendenziose e l’intervistatore è proprio di Rolling Stone.
