La nascita della maglia azzurra: romanticismo o una copia “sbiadita” dei francesi?
Nel 1911 l’impianto di riferimento per il calcio italiano era l’Arena Civica di Viale Byron, a Milano.
Qui, un anno dopo aver esordito battendo la Francia per 6-2, la nazionale italiana di calcio disputò una delle partite più emblematiche della propria storia. Nel giorno dell’Epifania, il 6 gennaio, proprio all’Arena Civica, i padroni di casa furono sconfitti 1-0 dall’Ungheria, ma a fare notizia fu la scelta delle divise.
Dopo aver disputato tutti i primi incontri in bianco, gli italiani si presentarono per la prima volta con la maglia azzurra, su cui spiccava una grande croce sabauda all’altezza del petto.
Le ipotesi sulla scelta del colore sono multiple: l’azzurro potrebbe essere stato ottenuto mitigando il blu scuro della Francia. L’ipotesi più romantica è che ad ispirarla siano stati i cieli limpidi ed i mari calmi della penisola. Quella più materialista, infine, sostiene che a causa della forte nevicata e della fitta nebbia di quel 6 gennaio, l’Italia abbia dovuto tingere le proprie divise per evitare di confondersi con l’ambiente circostante.
La strada sostenuta dalle fonti storiche, però, è molto più intuitiva: l’azzurro è in realtà un blu Savoia, colore di riferimento della casata che ha regnato nella penisola per la prima metà del Novecento. Gradualmente, l’azzurro soppiantò il bianco anche in tutti gli altri sport, fino ad ottenere una totale uniformità in occasione dei giochi olimpici di Los Angeles 1932.
Da lì in poi c’è solo storia, serie infinite di ricordi che uniscono un paese intero. In realtà, per quanto riguarda il nostro sport nazionale, delle eccezioni ci sono state. Prima della seconda guerra mondiale, ad esempio, Benito Mussolini volle i suoi vestiti di nero per Olimpiadi (1936) e mondiali (1938).
Fra innovazione e tradizione
Di tutt’altro tenore la discussione, molto recente, sulla maglia verde: usata casualmente nel 1954 durante un’amichevole contro l’Argentina, è stata riproposta nel 2019 da Puma, sponsor tecnico della nazionale, come terza divisa. All’epoca fu una richiesta dell’arbitro, confuso dall’accostamento tra albiceleste e azzurro, a costringere gli addetti della nazionale a trovare undici maglie di un colore alternativo. Ai giorni nostri è stata una precisa scelta di marketing.
Discussa e criticata da più voci, la divisa verde presenta dettagli dorati e una trama che richiama i tessuti del Rinascimento. Inoltre, il colore è quello delle divise utilizzate dalle nazionali giovanili per diversi anni, quando l’azzurro era un vanto da dover guadagnare con sudore e impegno. I più tradizionalisti – compreso il CT Mancini – storcono il naso, ma la verità è che la divisa risulta fresca, dal design accattivante e adatta a fare presa sul disilluso pubblico adolescenziale.
