Partiamo dalle origini, di sicuro almeno una volta nella vita vi siete chiesti che cosa fosse la Vaporwave, che cosa ci fosse oltre quelle immagini di statue o monumenti sospesi in un cielo coloratissimo, le palme e gli oceani infiniti poligonali quasi cyber punk, numeri che sembrano orari giornalieri tipo 04:20 (su quest’ultimo ci arriviamo più avanti con l’articolo).
Rob Arcand, di Vice, afferma: «Sottogeneri con nomi come ‘vaportrap‘, ‘vaporgoth‘ e ‘vapornoise’ hanno acquisito popolarità all’interno del movimento, solo per trasformarsi rapidamente in nuove forme ancora più spoglie delle caratteristiche originali dello stile. Questa rapida proliferazione di sottogeneri è diventata parte della barzelletta della ‘vaporwave‘, alludendo all’assurdità del genere stesso anche se sembra che gli artisti la considerino una incredibile innovazione.»
La Vaporwave più che genere musicale, viene definito come “movimento artistico” o “culturale”, in alcuni casi artisti molto famosi fanno parte di questo panorama, tipo James Ferraro, BLANK BANSHEE, Vaperror, Architecture In Tokyo e 2 8 1 4 che vengono considerati delle chimere, ed è diventato un vero e proprio mestiere fare questo tipo musica. I loro album sono diventati punti di riferimento per tutti. La vaporwave è una corrente che vuole essere nostalgica per un passato che non è mai esistito, e vuole farlo con un sottofondo musicale che ripeschi le pubblicità anni 80 e 90 (di prodotti cosmetici, prodotti alimentari e per la casa). Queste basi vengono estrapolate e modificate, rese molto più lente della sigla originale, campionate e ovattate, in più, nella maggior parte dei casi, la musica viene concepita soltanto nelle ore notturne, e qui ritorniamo al numero 04:20. Ma non è tutto, questo genere va a mirare anche i videogiochi. Tutti voi conoscerete il famoso slogan A e s t h e t i c s, figlia dell’estetica dei primi giochi in 3D per console, filtrato in fucsia, viola, blu e azzurro, questi colori che poi muteranno in futuro per diventare rosa e saranno i colori tipici dei primi movimenti Trap (eh si, dovete sapere che la Trap prende ispirazione proprio da questo). Insomma, ci sarebbe molto da dire su questo argomento, anche perché pochi anni dopo si formeranno altri movimenti e altri sottogeneri. L’hardvapour, Synthwave, Retrowave, Chillwave, Smooth Jazz, Future Funk e Lo Fi saranno i futuri generi che conquisteranno le masse dei quartieri o delle metropoli americane, cinesi e giapponesi.
Oggi ci soffermiamo su un sottogenere che fa parte di questa branca, ma che si distacca molto dalla scuola di pensiero e dal concept che la vaporwave inizialmente vuole trasmettere. La musica Mallsoft o Muzak, come dice la parola, è la classica musica dei centri commerciali multipiano, delle reception degli alberghi, di negozi al dettaglio, ascensori, autobus e taxi; in particolare si riferisce ad alcune espressioni di popular music, spesso strumentali, che vengono comunemente diffuse all’interno di spazi pubblici. Il termine viene poi utilizzato per descrivere genericamente tutti quei tipi di musica leggera e easy listening. Questo tipo di musica è contraddistinta da melodie molto semplici che possano essere ripetute continuamente in modo discreto. Le dinamiche delle sonorità sono poi ridotte al minimo, in modo che i livelli di suono alti e bassi non disturbino l’ascoltatore. Questo stile musicale è stato usato nei mass media e nei film comici, dove scene intense o drammatiche venivano interrotte o sospese da scene con tipiche musiche da ascensore o simili. La Muzak Holdings Corporation è l’etichetta discografica più influente in questo tipo di “business musicale” e Il suo nome viene spesso identificato ironicamente con la musica da ascensore, anche se non era l’unica offerta della compagnia. Dal 1997 la Muzak utilizza anche artisti originali per le sue risorse musicali. In questo caso anche qui vengono fatti dei lavori allo stesso modo della Vaporwave, la differenza è che non usa gli stessi Concept proposti dalla vapor bensì foto di spazi pubblici filtrate o modificate in 3D, o addirittura anche foto di città e skyline in piena notte.
Con il passare degli anni, e con l’avvento della musica moderna, molti artisti pop, rap ma anche di musica un po’ più estrema come il metal, hanno fatto uso, se non abusato, di queste sonorità per abbinarle a delle attitudini che vogliono trasmettere altro. Qui possiamo citare artisti di fama mondiale come The Weekend, che in alcuni dei suoi brani presenta dei reminder a questo filone, oppure Childish Gambino. Anche in Italia possiamo godere di alcuni artisti che si sono avventurati in questo universo, come Cosmo o Gazzelle. Nella musica metal invece, possiamo citare gli Issues o in particolare l’ultimo album dei Dayseeker (Sleeptalk).
Che dir si voglia, questo movimento in un modo o nell’altro ha conquistato l’animo delle persone a livello uditivo e/o compositivo. Chi produce dei brani a scopo ironico o satirico, e chi invece vuole trasmettere qualcosa di più profondo e personale, che va a scavare in una determinata esperienza o storia di quella persona, che come visione si avvicina molto al movimento emo e dark gothic. La Mallsoft, invece, vuole distaccarsi da tutto questo mettendo in atto altre regole e visioni.
