In particolare 33 modelli diversi, solo per la serie Air, editi ognuno in decine e decine di colorazioni e materiali diversi. Il “jumpman” è ovunque, a rappresentare la più grande eredità di Michael Jordan. MJ, per i pochi esseri umani che non ne fossero a conoscenza, è riconosciuto da tutti (by acclamation, per citare il sito ufficiale NBA) come il più grande giocatore di basket mai esistito. Ad ingigantire la sua leggenda, già pesante di per sé, c’è il suo brand. Jordan, proprietà della Nike ma a tutti gli effetti un marchio indipendente, si aggira attorno ai tre miliardi di dollari annui di fatturato.

Dietro il marchio principe dello streetwear internazionale, ed in particolare del mercato delle sneakers, c’è proprio il jumpman, logo che ritrae lo stesso Michael impegnato in una schiacciata a gambe divaricate. Una silhouette talmente iconica da diventare ben presto equivalente, per notorietà, allo swoosh di Nike o alle three stripes, di Adidas.
La nascita embrionale di quell’istantanea è databile attorno al 1984.
MJ, impegnato nella preparazione delle Olimpiadi di Los Angeles (vigeva ancora la regola interna alla nazionale statunitense di affrontare la manifestazione a cinque cerchi con soli giocatori provenienti dalle università), nelle quali conquisterà l’oro, viene immortalato da Jacobus Rentmeester per Life Magazine.
La foto è indubbiamente suggestiva: il sole nascente sullo sfondo, la semplcità di un canestro e un albero spoglio e, tra loro, Jordan abbigliato di tutto punto. Tuta USA nell’inconfondibile rosso-bianco-blu e candide calzature… New Balance! Incredibile ma vero, all’epoca Michael non aveva ancora firmato il suo contratto di sponsorizzazione.

L’idea però, era lanciata, e dopo la firma da record (2.5 milioni di dollari, briciole nella NBA di oggi, letteralmente montagne di soldi in quella di 35 anni fa) Nike ne approfittò, riproponendo la stessa immagine per la prima grande campagna di impatto a nome Jordan. Gambe allargate in un tentativo di schiacciata, uno skyline come sfondo, e ai piedi la forma delle leggendarie Air Jordan 1, che ad oggi rimangono le più iconiche, imitate e ricercate sneakers del mondo.

OG, quando tutto ebbe inizio
Basti pensare che un paio di Air Jordan 1 OG Chicago (le originali prodotte nel 1985, in colorazione bianco/rossa/nera che matchava la divisa dei Bulls) oggi arriva a costare, basandoci sui pochissimi esemplari in vendita sul portale-bibbia Stockx, oltre 20.000 dollari. Nonostante le diatribe legali (nel 2017 Rentmeester portò in tribunale Nike, sostanzialmente accusandola di aver copiato dalle sue foto l’idea del Jumpman, perdendo però la causa) ora quell’immagine di MJ “volante” campeggia ovunque nel mondo.
Eppure, svelerà sorridendo anni dopo, quella foto non rappresentava una vera e propria schiacciata. Fu semplicemente una posa fatta in aria dopo un salto, ma senza rincorsa né un vero e proprio gesto tecnico diverso dal pallone sollevato sopra la testa col braccio sinistro. In sostanza, più simile a un grand jeté della danza classica che ad un’azione da ammirare su un parquet.
Il contributo di Tinker Hatfield
Difatti, il primissimo logo Air Jordan era diverso da quello attuale: prima dell’arrivo di Tinker Hatfield, sui primi due modelli della serie campeggiava un pallone da basket stilizzato e “alato”.
L’arrivo di Hatfield cambiò le carte in tavola: le Air Jordan 3, suo primo design, furono accolte dal clamore internazionale, e contribuirono alla scrittura di un testamento. MJ, all’epoca ai ferri corti con l’azienda, si convinse ad onorare il suo contratto e collaborò con Tinker per diciassette delle successive Air Jordan. Ad oggi Hatfield è considerato una leggenda dello streetwear e più in generale del design, un pluripremiato innovatore. Tra le altre onorificenze gli sono stati dedicati un episodio della serie Abstract (sui grandi nomi del design, edita da Netflix) ed una recentissima linea di Nike Air Max, direttamente ispirata dai suoi schizzi di quella che sarebbe diventata un’altra leggenda delle sneakers.
A contribuire all’esplosione mondiale del jumpman, però, fu anche e soprattutto il suo protagonista.

Lo Slam Dunk Contest 1988
Ci troviamo al Chicago Stadium, casa dei Bulls e di conseguenza del numero 23, ed è il 7 febbraio 1988. È un sabato, e la National Basketball Association, reduce da un decennio d’oro che metterà le basi per farla diventare una delle leghe più influenti dello sport mondiale, sta mettendo in scena il cosiddetto All-Star Weekend. Di contorno alla partita delle stelle, con i migliori giocatori dell’est che affrontano quelli dell’ovest, da sempre spiccano altre due competizioni: la gara del tiro da tre punti e soprattutto quella delle schiacciate, vero e proprio highlight della tre-giorni, reintrodotta nel 1984.
Il regolamento è estremamente semplice: si parte palla in mano, senza compagni né avversari, e da lì spazio alla creatività e alle doti fisiche per inchiodare la palla nel canestro nella maniera più creativa possibile. Cinque giudici che votano ogni schiacciata da 1 a 10, un totale di cinque round eliminatori e tre round di finale uno contro uno.
Ai blocchi di partenza ci sono tutti i più attesi: c’è il vincitore del 1985, Wilkins, ed il suo compagno di squadra Spud Webb, che dall’”alto” del suo metro e settanta ha osato togliere lo scettro al compagno l’anno successivo, rimanendo ad oggi il giocatore più basso ad aver mai vinto una gara delle schiacciate, e soprattutto c’è il campione in carica, Michael Jordan.
A passare alla seconda fase sono Jordan, Otis Smith, Clyde Drexler e soprattutto Dominique Wilkins, ala degli Atlanta Hawks, che si è presentato al pubblico letteralmente decollando dalla linea di fondo e schiacciando, in reverse, una palla che aveva prima fatto arrivare tra le sue gambe. 49 per la giuria, ma la reazione del pubblico non è neanche paragonabile a quella delle schiacciate di MJ. Ogni volta che il nativo di Brooklyn termina una schiacciata, lo Stadium esplode letteralmente. La sensazione è che l’elettricità generata basterebbe tranquillamente a tenere accesa mezza città.

All’inizio della semifinale, Jordan regala il primo fulmine: carica la batteria del suo pubblico, allontanandosi dal ferro fino a raggiungere la linea di fondo opposta. Dopo aver coperto l’intero campo di corsa, il 23 decolla appena dopo la linea del tiro libero e, quasi fluttuando, schiaccia con una mano sola. Terremoto. La gente di Chicago è letteralmente impazzita e la gara non ha ancora raggiunto il giro di boa. Drexler lo imita degnamente, ma il suo 45 paga al 50 tondo ottenuto dal pupillo di casa. A fare la voce grossa è Dominique Wilkins. Aumenta l’intensità e Jordan, con l’inconfondibile lingua di fuori, sceglie di far passare la palla accanto ad entrambi i fianchi prima di inchiodare alla massima potenza con entrambe le mani. Il movimento, però, è leggermente “strappato” e i giudici lo notano. Nonostante la pioggia incessante di insulti che arrivano dalle retrovie, il 47 sembra un punteggio tutto sommato giusto.
La schiacciata della leggenda
Terzo ed ultimo round, Dominique Wilkins ha il match point e non tradisce: partenza dalla linea laterale sinistra e di nuovo manifestazione di potenza ed elevazione inaudita dopo il mulinello a due mani. Il boato, però, stavolta arriva solo al momento della pubblicazione dei voti: “solo” 45/50. Un voto che già ai commentatori dell’epoca sembra piuttosto basso e che ha un grandissimo effetto collaterale: tiene in gara Micheal Jordan, al quale servono 48 punti con l’ultima schiacciata per eguagliare i 145 di Wilkins.
Tutti i presenti allo Stadium lo capiscono e balzano in piedi. Il mormorio diffuso diventa rapidamente un insieme assordante di urla mentre il beniamino di casa prende il centro della scena. Qualche palleggio, un attimo di esitazione, quel tanto che basta a far arrivare al limite l’hype dei suoi tifosi. MJ butta un’occhiata al fotografo di Sports Illustrated, indicandosi un ginocchio. Vuole che lui si sposti in quella direzione per poterlo immortalare dall’angolo migliore.
A quel punto, indietreggiando fino alla linea di fondo si crea la sua personalissima passerella verso la leggenda. La schiacciata è di nuovo quella con cui aveva iniziato la semifinale, ma stavolta ha i crismi dell’opera d’arte: ogni passo sul parquet fa aumentare il volume dell’incitamento e, arrivato alla linea del tiro libero, Jordan prende direttamente il volo. Fluttuando, il 23 rimane in aria per un tempo che sembra infinito, e quando impatta il canestro è ancora in fase ascendente, come se potesse continuare su quella traiettoria per diversi metri ancora.
