Diamond Eyes è frutto di una storia complicata e inizialmente concepito con un altro nome, ovvero “Eros“. Il grave incidente stradale che poi ha portato alla morte di Chi Cheng nel 2013, ex bassista della band, ha fatto sì che questo album rispecchiasse pienamente lo stato d’animo, uno di quei pochi casi dove la musica parla chiaro e tondo, ponendo una mano sulla spalla dell’ascoltatore. Qui si riparte da zero, rispettando il dolore per un amico e reclutando il nuovo bassista (che provvisoriamente doveva sostituire Chi per qualche tour fino alla guarigione) Sergio Vega (ex – Quicksand). Ormai sono passati dieci anni, la vita di un bambino, per un disco che guarda al cielo con rabbia ma senza mollare la presa.
Dieci anni prima…
Chino Moreno (vocalist) racconta:
Con tutto ciò che stavamo passando, i Deftones avevano bisogno di qualcosa di nuovo in cui riversare pensieri, energia ed emozioni… Qualcosa di più ottimistico. Per quanto riguarda le condizioni di Chi, l’ho visto durante le vacanze, ha un bell’aspetto. Ormai è passato un anno e mezzo, sta facendo progressi. È ancora in stato semi-cosciente. Apre gli occhi e ti guarda, ma non riesce ancora a comunicare. Verrà uno specialista dalla East Coast che conosce medicina sperimentale e proverà a svegliarlo. In teoria, questo dottore ha una probabilità di successo dell’85% in questi casi, quindi cerchiamo di essere il più positivi possibile. Spero di avere ancora una conversazione con Chi, è uno dei miei migliori amici e mi manca.

La band di Sacramento è stata più forte del proprio destino, ha visto il bassista trovarsi in uno stato di coma dal quale non è riuscito a sfuggire, mantenendo condizioni stabili ma comunque critiche. Nasce così Diamond Eyes, simboleggiato da un bellissimo barbagianni sulla copertina, un disco registrato in poco più di due mesi, attorno al quale aleggiava un certo alone di scetticismo da parte dei fans, visti appunto i suoi rapidi tempi di stesura e gli sfavorevoli avvenimenti che lo avevano preceduto.
Come ci suggerisce il nome, Diamond Eyes è un disco brillante, che racchiude una varietà di suoni complementari l’uno all’altro, unendo la potenza degli esordi a soluzioni più ricercate, mostrando però una compattezza che forse mancava nelle precedenti due uscite discografiche. Le litanie ambientali tra Cure e i Duran Duran degli esordi, trovando spazio anche a riff pesanti e cadenzati, forse anche prog, e più minimal. Impossibile dimenticare la potenza della title track, o di Royal, tre minuti tesi, sporcati dalle nebulose d’elettronica di Frank Delgado, dopodiché inizia la cattiva CMND/CTRL, tenendo all’angolo l’ascoltatore come i Deftones sanno fare.
Ascoltando in effetti, si ha l’impressione che l’anima di White Pony sia presente nell’intero Diamond Eyes e anzi sia un’evoluzione stilistica, giocando d’impatto e potenza, ma mai fine a se stessa. Quasi stoner ma heavy, You’ve Seen The Butcher è la prima vera incursione in sperimentazioni atmosferiche, ma la prova del nove la dà Moreno, ancora una volta la sua voce è una delle poche al giorno d’oggi che può essere realmente considerata uno strumento.
Costruzioni fluide, eteree ed euforiche aprono le danze a Beauty School, mantenendosi in maniera standard e senza complicarsi troppo. Una nota di merito sicuramente va a Sex Tape, che vede i Deftones sfidare sé stessi sul terreno del songwriting elegante, una delle canzoni migliori dell’album, un possibile highlight in carriera. 976-Evil è un brano a cui piace giocarsela sulle emozioni piuttosto che sulla struttura classica delle canzoni, e in conclusione This Place Is Death, una chiusura cupa, nei toni e nel mood, che guida l’album verso una solenne ma comunque potente chiusura.
Sempre Chino Moreno racconta:
Non volevo parlare di problemi nei testi, non mi piace ascoltare i problemi delle persone, a me piace la musica. La musica è soffocata da tutti questi lamenti sin dai primi anni ’90. È una storia vecchia ormai. Ma invece di andare dalla parte opposta ed ascoltare i Black Eyed Peas, che è roba decisamente stupida, ho scelto di ascoltare molta più musica strumentale. Canto veramente poco di me stesso su questo album. Mi sono ispirato alla musica con cui sono cresciuto, tipo i Cure, i Police e Sinèad O’Connor. Immagini visuali e nessuno storytelling.
Il risultato di questo è così, un album completamente nuovo formato da 11 canzoni che richiamano i primi tempi della band, pur senza rinunciare ad esplorare nuovi territori.
Dieci anni dopo…
Riesumando questo album e ascoltandolo attentamente, ci si rende conto di tutto il travaglio che c’è stato dietro, guardando anche attentamente la copertina, il barbagianni dà proprio l’idea che la vita va avanti, anche quando c’è il buio. Un album che rappresenta la rinascita di una band che, nonostante la vita ti mette davanti ad ostacoli che sembrano invalicabili, la forza d’animo, ma soprattutto la forza che questa arte sprigiona cioè, la musica, può essere l’arma che può battere ogni male. Dopo l’incidente di Cheng avrebbero potuto comprensibilmente mollare il progetto Deftones, un progetto dove il nu metal che andava tanto negli anni 90, era molto influenzato da generi come l’alternative, il grunge e lo shoegaze.
Una band che ha saputo rialzarsi, un disco che ne è la prova.
