All’inizio degli anni ’90 il panorama musicale mainstream era dominato da tre fenomeni principali: il Britpop, il Metal e ovviamente il Grunge. In questo contesto di musica pesante e non particolarmente felice, nel 1993 usciva l’album di un artista il quale sembrava aver vissuto la sua stagione migliore già un decennio prima e che, almeno in apparenza, aveva già sparato i suoi colpi migliori: Gordon Sumner, meglio noto con il nome di Sting, ex frontman dei Police.
Il disco in questione è Ten Summoner’s Tales, e oggi proveremo a spiegare, come nostro solito, perché valga la pena prestargli il nostro orecchio migliore.
Il disco
Pubblicato nel marzo del 1993 per la A&M Records, Ten Summoner’s Tales è il disco che rappresenta probabilmente il compimento della maturità personale ed artistica del cantautore inglese. Sting riesce a dare una delle sue migliori prove non solo come bassista e cantante, ma soprattutto come autore di musiche e testi. Il titolo dell’album è un gioco/omaggio che rimanda al cognome dell’autore e alla famosa raccolta di racconti scritta nel XIV secolo da Geoffrey Chaucher: “The Canterbury Tales”. Qui infatti il nome di uno dei personaggi in lingua originale è proprio The Summoner, ovvero “colui che evoca/invoca”. L’opera, quarta in carriera solista, si compone di 12 pezzi per un totale di circa 52 minuti, e offre alcune delle migliori performance mai mostrate da Sting. Il disco inoltre gode di un curioso primato: si tratta del primo album ad essere stato distribuito legalmente su internet, venduto in formato digipack.
Questo lavoro nel suo complesso fu tanto apprezzato da trionfare ai Grammy Awards del ’94 nelle categorie “Miglior interpretazione vocale maschile”, “Miglior sonoro per un album non-classico” e in particolare “Miglior video musicale in forma lunga”. Sting ricevette tale premio grazie a una sorta di video documentario, in cui lui e la band eseguono l’album per intero nel suo studio casalingo nella propria tenuta in campagna. Il video, nella sua semplicità concettuale, fu premiato tanto per via del fascino dei musicisti in studio mentre fanno quello che gli riesce meglio, quanto per l’ambientazione che fa da cornice perfetta per le musiche.
Ten Summoner’s Tales fu inoltre candidato come “Album dell’anno”. Non riuscì a vincere in tale categoria, ma semplicemente perché a contendere il premio si presentò Whitney Huston con la colonna sonora del film “The Bodyguard”, dove figurava un singolo di un certo successo come “I Will Always Love You”.
Prologo: “Se mai smarrissi la mia fede in te”
È da questa prospettiva ipotetica che l’album prende inizio e qui possiamo toccare con mano la capacità introspettiva e il grande talento nell’arrangiamento dell’autore. If I Ever Loose My Faith In You, sviluppata tutta in prima persona, si presenta come una riflessione sulla fede nei valori, nelle istituzioni e negli ideali che regolano la nostra vita, come la scienza, il progresso, la chiesa, la televisione e la politica. Sting riflette su come queste grandi categorie siano diventate vuote, ma anche come, se smarrissimo completamente anche la fede nella persona che amiamo, solo allora non ci sarebbe più niente da fare.

Il brano è strutturato come un pezzo Rock in cui la melodia è arricchita da un’armonica a bocca. If I Ever Loose My Faith In You è diventato una colonna del repertorio del bassista inglese, aggiudicandogli il Grammy per “la miglior interpretazione vocale maschile” e diventando oggetto di svariate cover, tra cui vale la pena menzionare quella proposta da Lady Gaga al Kennedy Space Center nel 2014.
I Magnifici 7(/4)
A seguire troviamo Love Is Stronger Than Justice (Magnificent Seven), epica cavalcata dal sapore western, dove si alternano strofe cantate e ampie parti strumentali. Il brano è caratterizzato da delle interessanti variazioni ritmiche, con due parti principali che si alternano: una strofa Rock in 7/4 e un ritornello in 4/4 marcatamente Country. Si narra delle avventure di sette fratelli, con un chiaro riferimento al classico film western “I Magnifici Sette” del 1960 diretto da John Sturges, a sua volta ispirato a “I Sette Samurai” del ’54 di Akira Kurosawa. Sting in un’intervista ha affermato che l’idea dei “magnifici sette” gli sia venuta in mente proprio mentre cercava di scrivere la strofa in 7/4.
Fields Of Gold
A seguire troviamo uno dei brani più famosi ed iconici di Sting: Fields of Gold, un lento morbido dall’atmosfera bucolica, coronato dalla presenza di una cornamusa. Il brano è sicuramente figlio dell’ambientazione in cui il disco è stato realizzato, ovvero gli studi della Lake House nel Wiltshire, a pochi chilometri dalla città di Salsbury, in piena campagna inglese. Sting nei primi anni ’90 acquistò questa tenuta con lo scopo di rifugiarvisi per vivere in tranquillità insieme a sua moglie Trudie Styler. In questo contesto così ameno e tranquillo, egli decise di allestire uno studio di registrazione domestico ed è proprio qui che Doug Nichol girò il video integrale di Ten Sommoner’s Tales. Fields Of Gold in ultima istanza più che una canzone d’amore può essere visto come un tributo alla brughiera inglese.
Heavy Cloud But No Rain
Il brano successivo è Heavy Cloud But No Rain. Si tratta di una canzone dal sapore Blues dal groove solido con l’aggiunta di un tamburello, caratterizzata da un organo Hammond molto Gospel, il tutto completato da una chitarra Funky e dall’iconico basso di Sting. Il testo si presenta come un insieme di brevi novelle, tutte accomunate dalla vana attesa della pioggia. L’autore spera che la pioggia lavi via la sua tristezza, l’astrologo di corte prega che la pioggia rimandi l’esecuzione di re Luigi XVI, il contadino pieno di debiti recita una formula magica per far piovere e l’amante disperato cerca di conquistare la donna dei suoi sogni, la quale dice che gli si concederà solo in un giorno di pioggia. In tutti questi casi l’epilogo è sempre il medesimo:
Heavy Cloud… But No Rain.
Il quinto brano è She’s Too Good For Me, intermezzo Rock & Roll dal ritmo incalzante in cui Sting, che qui suona il contrabbasso, racconta con tono scanzonato tutto ciò che non piace alla sua ragazza, concludendo che lei è troppo buona per lui. L’unico momento in cui il ritmo si interrompe è nel bridge centrale durante il quale l’atmosfera si ribalta, un violino inizia a suonare un tema malinconico e il protagonista racconta come la sua donna preferirebbe che lui si lavasse un po’ più spesso, la portasse a vedere l’opera e di come lui potrebbe distorcersi per essere l’uomo perfetto… Ma alla fine probabilmente lei lo preferisca così com’è.
Seven Days: Tra tempi dispari…
A seguire troviamo un tripudio di dissonanze numeriche. Il sesto brano è Seven Days e la sua caratteristica saliente è di essere interamente concepito in 5/4. Il groove del pezzo è diventato una delle firme più iconiche di Vinnie Colaiuta, batterista, corista e motore di tutto il disco.
Oltre a contribuire con il suo suono iconico e l’intenzione decisa nei brani, Colaiuta arricchisce un pezzo già tecnicamente elaborato con un gioco ritmico geniale. Seven Days infatti è composto in un tempo dispari, elemento classico della musica difficile, ma viene reso particolarmente accattivante all’ascolto grazie ad una poliritmia. Colaiuta nella strofa accenta il primo di ogni quattro colpi sul charleston, mantenendo il backbeat sul 4° quarto, creando così un’illusione ritmica che al primo ascolto fa percepire il ritmo come pari, rendendolo più rotondo e scorrevole. Il fill e i fraseggi sulla batteria poi sono letteralmente fuori dalla realtà.
… E autocitazioni
Il testo racconta la vicenda di una donna contesa tra due uomini, la quale consegna ad uno di loro un biglietto con un ultimatum: “sette giorni”, ovvero il tempo necessario per decidere chi scegliere tra i due. Nel frattempo il destinatario del biglietto tenta di affrontare il rivale, rendendosi però conto che uno scontro fisico sarebbe quantomeno perdente. Il brano si conclude con un eccezionale easter egg: durante l’improvvisazione finale in tempi dispari, Sting canta:
“Do I have to tell a story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
It’s a big enough umbrella
But it’s always me that ends up getting wet”
Si tratta di una citazione da un altro brano risalente ai tempi dei Police, ovvero “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, presente nell’album “Ghost In The Machine” del 1981. Questi stessi versi compaiono anche nel brano “Oh My God”, dall’ultimo album dei Police “Synchronicity” del 1983.
Citare se stessi non una, ma due volte è sicuramente una grave forma di egolatria, ma effettivamente ci stava molto bene.
Il lato B
A seguire troviamo Saint Augustine In Hell, che parte con un lungo accordo di tastiera in crescendo, seguito dall’attacco all’unisono di tutta la band. La canzone, suonata interamente in 7/4, ruota intorno a riferimenti alla religione cattolica, al culto dei santi e in particolare al Diavolo, al quale presta la voce David Foxxe, attore e produttore inglese amico di Sting.
It’s Probably Me
L’ottavo brano di Ten Summoner’s Tales, It’s Probably Me, è sicuramente un classico del repertorio di Sting, ma ironicamente quella incisa nell’album non è la versione più famosa. Il brano venne originariamente scritto da Sting, Eric Clapton e Michael Kamen nel 1992 e utilizzato nella colonna sonora del film “Arma Letale 3”. Quella presente nell’album del ’93 è una riedizione completamente riarrangiata da Sting con musicisti differenti. In entrambi gli arrangiamenti il pezzo è una perla, ma Eric Clapton che tiene il tempo con un accendino Zippo a benzina gli dona un valore aggiunto.
Il pezzo successivo è una specie di bonus track: Everybody Laughed At You fu esclusa dalla prima versione del disco per il mercato Canadese e Statunitense. Fu però reso disponibile in formato singolo, con l’aggiunta come b-side di una versione dal testo alternativo intitolata January Stars.
Shape Of My Heart
la decima canzone dell’album è un altro masterpiece della produzione del cantante inglese, ovvero Shape Of My Heart. Il pezzo si regge su un riff di chitarra acustica scritto da Dominic Miller, cui si vanno a sovrapporre la batteria, il basso, la voce, l’organo e infine un’armonica a bocca melancolica, il tocco di classe che va a completare l’atmosfera.
Stando a quanto dichiarato da Sting, il protagonista del brano è un giocatore di carte il quale non scommette per vincere, ma per trovare un senso nella fortuna stessa. Anche questo brano ha ottenuto un enorme successo, venendo utilizzato nei titoli di coda del film “Léon”. La parte strumentale, anche grazie al suo riff così riconoscibile, è stata campionata e riutilizzata in numerose altre produzioni di successo.
Ci avviamo verso la conclusione con Something The Boy Said. Una delle qualità che mi hanno sempre affascinato di Sting è la sua capacità di scrivere canzoni così nitidamente immaginabili visivamente, quasi come dei film, e questo brano è un perfetto esempio. Egli racconta la storia di sé stesso che deve partire per un lungo viaggio insieme ad un amico, ma viene ammonito da un ragazzino, il quale gli preannuncia che non rivedrà più le loro facce perché i due diventeranno cibo per i corvi. È possibile immaginare ogni singolo dettaglio: il ragazzo, i protagonisti, l’auto e il deserto. Pura magia.
Epilogo: “Niente di me”
Come ogni raccolta di storie, anche quella di Ten Summoner’s Tales doveva avere una conclusione. Questa arriva con un intro ritmato ed allegro sulle note di Nothing ‘Bout Me (Epilogue), canzone del sapore molto Jazz, rinforzato dalla presenza dei fiati. Il testo è un divertente rimando al fatto che, per quanto gli altri possano controllare tutto di noi (il curriculum, la dichiarazione dei redditi, i libri letti etc.) ciò non sia poi tanto importante, perché in fin dei conti: “You still know nothing ‘bout me”. Oltre che un bel pezzo, questa potrebbe essere una riflessione attuale anche oggi nell’epoca dei social.

Conclusioni
Dopo aver parlato nel dettaglio dei brani contenuti nell’album, è necessario aggiungere una riflessione. Oltre alla grande perizia autoriale e alla qualità degli arrangiamenti che sfiora la perfezione, ciò che rende questo disco così bello è la sua capacità di essere un compromesso che non accetta compromessi. Ten Summoner’s Tales unisce elementi Rock, Country, Jazz, Fusion e Pop in un elegante equilibrio che non sacrifica la sincerità e la ricerca di originalità dell’autore né la fruibilità da parte del pubblico.
Seven Days, un brano tecnicamente complicatissimo con metriche atipiche, è riuscito a entrare nelle classifiche di molti paesi. L’intero album, registrato sotto forma di mediometraggio, è riuscito a vincere un Grammy Award. Un sound così raffinato ed elegante è riuscito a farsi strada in un periodo in cui le coordinate del mercato musicale vertevano in tutt’altra direzione, verso riff distorti e volumi altissimi, scegliendo di non seguire la moda e di andare al di là del presente. Sting all’età di 42 anni si è rimesso in gioco con un disco che lo rappresenta per come è, senza essere ruffiano, e dopo 27 anni non ha perso un grammo del suo fascino.
