Oggi parliamo di Stay (Faraway, So Close!) degli U2 e, come di consueto, vorrei cercare di spiegare le ragioni per cui questo brano è così straordinario. Prima di fare ciò però è necessaria un’importante premessa metodologica.
Alcuni sostengono che la poesia, o più in generale tutte le cose belle, non possano essere spiegate. Peggio ancora, c’è chi sostiene non solo l’impossibilità di questa operazione, ma addirittura la sua nocività, un po’ come una battuta che, se ha bisogno di essere spiegata, vuol dire che è caduta piatta sul pubblico.
Chi vi scrive è di un avviso un po’ diverso, ma, tralasciando la mia opinione, ancora una volta cercheremo di rifarci a maestri più affidabili.
“Anche i ginecologi s’innamorano”
Umberto Eco nel suo famoso testo Sulla Letteratura, pubblicato nel 2002 per Bompiani, parla anche di questo argomento. Egli sostiene l’importanza di usare mezzi assolutamente rigorosi per spiegare un testo, un’opera e (prendendo in prestito il termine dal Convivio di Dante) anche una canzone.
I malati di filologia diranno che la canzone di cui parla Eco e quella in questione non sono la stessa cosa. Credo però che il messaggio sia comunque comprensibile.
Eco per spiegare questo concetto conia uno slogan che probabilmente è uno dei più belli che avrete occasione di sentire:
«Anche i ginecologi si innamorano», cioè passano la vita a studiare scientificamente una certa cosa, ma poi quando hanno l’incontro magico con una donna è come se fosse la prima volta.
Stay (Faraway, So Close!) è una di quelle cose belle che credo meritino di essere spiegate.
Zooropa
L’ottavo album degli U2 è uno dei miei grandi amori di sempre, in cui coesistono così tante cose meravigliose da farmi pensare ogni volta di essermelo solo immaginato. Sulla scia del loro precedente successo Achtung Baby, la band irlandese pubblica questo disco nel 1993 durante lo svolgimento dello ZooTour in Europa.
Ogni canzone è un capolavoro nei testi, nelle composizioni, negli arrangiamenti e nelle esecuzioni. Ogni cosa sembra stare al posto giusto nel momento giusto, con una rara combinazione di elementi eterogenei che difficilmente avrebbero potuto funzionare così bene insieme. Non si può non tributare una parte del merito al mai troppo osannato produttore Brian Eno, senza il cui contributo l’umanità sarebbe di certo un po’ più povera.
Come dicevo, ogni brano è bellissimo: Numb è una perla atipica nella produzione della band con un sound molto elettronico e tagliente, effetti pesantissimi ed è anche l’unico brano nella storia della band ad essere cantato principalmente dal chitarrista The Edge.
Lemon è anch’esso un pezzo iconico, per non parlare della canzone che chiude l’album ovvero The Wanderer, cantata niente meno che da Johnny Cash.
Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
Stay (Faraway, So Close!) rimane però l’unico vero e proprio singolo estratto dal disco (peraltro con un lato B da capogiro: una cover di I’ve Got You Under My Skin cantata insieme da Bono e Frank Sinatra).
La canzone si presenta con un arrangiamento molto semplice e minimale, ma perfettamente calibrato. L’inossidabile batteria di Larry Mullen Jr. tiene il tempo in maniera dritta e pulita con pochissimi abbellimenti (il charleston che si apre alla fine di ogni strofa è pura magia), con un suono di rullante acuto e tagliente perfetto per segnare il back-beat. Su di esso s’inseriscono la chitarra di The Edge e il basso di Adam Clayton, creando tutti insieme la base musicale perfetta per uno dei testi più belli scritti da Bono.
Stay racconta fondamentalmente la storia di una donna abusata, ormai giunta all’accettazione del proprio destino, visto come unica ragione di vita
You say when he hit you, you feel alive.
La protagonista però un giorno ha un incontro con una persona con cui riesce ad avere un contatto vero. Un incontro che sconvolge completamente il suo animo.
La parte centrale
C’è un momento che riesce a rappresentare pienamente la grandezza del brano. Comincia precisamente nel pre ritornello:
And if you look, you look through me.
And when you talk, you talk at me.
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing...
Un crescendo di 4 quarti, entra il sintetizzatore di Brian Eno e il tutto esplode con:
If I could stay
Then the night would give you up
Stay then the day would keep its trust
Stay with the demons you drowned
Stay with the spirit I found
Stay and the night would be enough
Ho ascoltato questa canzone non so quante volte ma qui l’emozione rimane sempre incontenibile. Merito anche dei cori magistrali di The Edge probabilmente.
Il brano si chiude in modo enigmatico con le parole “solo uno sparo e un rumore, come un angelo che cade al suolo”, lasciando intendere che la protagonista si sia suicidata.
Stay, così come tutto l’album, è stato molto apprezzato dalla critica, ma il suo successo commerciale non è stato eccezionale. La pubblicazione del disco durante un tour già cominciato e le particolari strategie adottate nella promozione non furono in grado di mantenerlo a lungo nelle classifiche. In seguito gli U2 riproposero sempre di meno i brani tratti da Zooropa dal vivo, data anche la difficile replicazione e la disomogeneità di stile con altri pezzi del loro repertorio.
Bono ha dichiarato in una intervista del 2005 a Rolling Stone di essere molto affezionato alla canzone, che reputa una delle più sottovalutate del repertorio della band. Stay viene ancora occasionalmente riproposta, sempre in versione acustica, nei concerti degli U2.
Il videoclip
Gli U2 si sono sempre dimostrati ambiziosi anche nei video da accostare ai loro brani e questo non fa eccezione. Stay fu infatti scelta da Wim Wenders come parte della colonna sonora per il suo film Così lontano, così così vicino, sequel del cult Il Cielo sopra Berlino. Fu quindi deciso di utilizzare delle scene dal film per creare un videoclip ad hoc per la canzone.
Non pago e assolutamente privo della paura delle altezze, il cantante della band irlandese decise che fosse necessario aggiungere delle nuove scene, le quali furono girate appositamente a Berlino. In alcune di queste si può ammirare proprio Bono che canta dalla cima della Colonna della Vittoria (non chiedetemi come abbia fatto ad arrivare fin lassù).
Conclusioni
Ci sono un insieme di elementi straordinari che coesistono in Stay (Faraway, So Close!) degli U2. Il gusto e la bravura di tutti i membri della band, uno dei migliori testi scritti da Bono, una delle sue più mirabili interpretazioni e il genio di Brian Eno che riesce a riportare in questo disco la stessa incredibile atmosfera berlinese che aveva reso grandi album come “Heroes” di David Bowie.
