Si dice che gli spiriti dei morti aleggiassero su viveur quali Al Pacino, Iggy Pop e Joe Strummer, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio e Jared Leto, divenuti assidui frequentatori.

Le porte del club rimasero serrate per due settimane, coperte di fiori e lettere dei fan, dopo che il giovane talento River Jude Phoenix esalò il suo ultimo respiro proprio sul marciapiede antistante il civico 8852.
Era la notte di Halloween di ventisei anni fa. Quella sera era prevista una jam session, così River portò con sé la sua chitarra. Una volta arrivato incrociò Flea dei Red Hot Chili Peppers che lo informò che non sarebbe stato possibile per lui esibirsi, la lista di quelli che avrebbero suonato con Johnny era già bella lunga.
Un po’ amareggiato, ma intenzionato a godersi la serata, si sedette ad un tavolo assieme al fratello Joaquin, la sorella Rain e la fidanzata Samantha Mathis, conosciuta sul set di Quella cosa chiamata amore. Proprio lei racconterà di aver avuto la netta sensazione che qualcosa di spiacevole sarebbe accaduto, e di aver cercato di convincere il bell’attore di rimanere a casa.
Ma nulla da fare, River era stranamente su di giri, come se avesse assunto droga di nascosto. Il bravo ragazzo della porta accanto, vegano e attivista per i diritti degli animali e dei meno fortunati, che aveva appena accettato un ruolo in Intervista col vampiro per guadagnare abbastanza da mandare la sorella al college e potersi ritirare, aveva un lato oscuro. L’idolo delle teenager da due anni stava combattendo una dipendenza. Nato sotto il segno del Leone, con Toro come segno lunare, rivelava una personalità estremamente sensibile e creativa, sfortunatamente incline alla depressione. River Phoenix era un bohémien disilluso dal mondo che lo aveva reso una star, era finito in questa spirale alla ricerca di stimoli che gli permettessero di superare anche i traumatici abusi infantili subiti all’interno della setta The Children of God, di cui i suoi genitori erano adepti.

E proprio come aveva fatto la sua famiglia, che nel prendere le distanze dal culto cambiò il cognome da Bottom a Phoenix per iniziare una nuova vita, River stava cercando di rinascere dalle proprie ceneri. Sfortunatamente, quando quella sera un conoscente gli portò un bicchiere al tavolo non si domandò che drink fosse e lo bevve tutto d’un fiato. Poco dopo iniziò a vomitare in preda alle convulsioni.
Si scoprì che si trattava di un mix di cocaina ed eroina chiamato “liquid speedball” che gli fu letale. Joaquin, che aveva compiuto diciannove anni solo tre giorni prima, effettuò una disperata chiamata ai soccorsi, mentre guardava l’adorato fratello disteso per terra esanime e tutti gli altri impietriti dallo spavento. E pensare che senza l’insistenza di River a ricominciare con la recitazione, oggi non avremmo goduto di interpretazioni straordinarie come quelle in Walk The Line, The Master, Joker e molti altri. Tutto merito di una VHS di Toro Scatenato e del suo discorso di incoraggiamento.
Senza dubbio la morte del ventitreenne fu una perdita inestimabile non solo per il mondo del cinema, che grazie al suo carisma lo ha visto imporsi e lasciare un segno con poche performance all’attivo, ma per l’umanità tutta, perché con il suo innato altruismo avrebbe potuto fare grandi cose. Leggendo Siddharta, dove il Fiume è un elemento epifanico fondamentale per il protagonista, i Phoenix scelsero il nome del loro primogenito, e una frase dell’opera su tutte ci rincuora:
«Il fiume si trova dovunque in ogni istante, alle sorgenti e alla foce, alla cascata, al traghetto, alle rapide, nel mare, in montagna, dovunque in ogni istante»
